Un Hawker Typhoon.
Questo caccia dall'aspetto muscolare venne progettato alla fine degli anni '30, quando la Hawker progettò il Tornado, che avrebbe dovuto sostituire il famoso Hurricane (il primo caccia monoplano della RAF). Non soddisfacente, dal Tornado derivò il Typhoon, il quale però si rivelò deludente nelle prestazioni alle alte quote e poco affidabile a causa del suo complesso motore Napier Sabre a 24 cilindri ad H, che era si molto potente (oltre 2000cv), ma prendeva fuoco abbastanza facilmente...
Il Typhoon rischiò di essere cestinato, ma all'epoca l'urgenza per nuovi mezzi era così alta che si cercò a tutti i costi di trovare un ruolo per questa macchina, in modo da non sprecare il denaro ed il tempo investitovi.
La risposta arrivò quando i primi Typhoon in servizio rivelarono prestazioni strabilianti alle basse quote contrastando le incursioni degli Fw-190.
Alle basse quote il "Tiffy" era velocissimo e molto manovrabile, e si capì così che poteva essere un eccellente caccia-bombardiere per l'attacco al suolo.
Armato di bombe, razzi e dei suoi devastanti cannoncini da 20mm, il Typhoon conobbe la gloria soprattutto dopo lo sbarco in Normandia, quando si rivelò insostituibile nell'appoggio ravvicinato alle truppe di terra che avanzavano, facendo piazza pulita di carri armati, artiglieria, locomotive e mezzi vari.

Quello che ho scelto di ritrarre è un Typhoon IB della produzione più tarda, ovvero con elica quadripala e tettuccio a goccia.

La "dura realtà" è che questo povero Typhoon aspetta di essere terminato da quasi tre anni! Ho finalmente trovato il tempo e la voglia, anche se ho dovuto rinunciare all'idea di disegnare uno sfondo.

Per i patiti d'aviazione: i numeri e le lettere di identificazione sono fittizi, non rompetevi la testa cercando informazioni su questo esemplare!

A note of color in a long B/W.

This is a Hawker Typhoon IB.
This muscular looking fighter design has its roots in the late '30s, when Hawker designed the Tornado, which was to replace the famous Hurricane (the first RAF monoplane fighter). The Tornado wasn't satisfactory, so from it came the Typhoon which, however, proved disappointing performance at high altitudes. Moreover, the Typhoon had very low reliability because of its complex Napier Sabre 24-cylinder H engine, which was astoundingly powerful (over 2000hp), but came on fire quite easily...
The Typhoon was in danger of being trashed, but then the urgency for new machines was so high that RAF tried at all costs to find a role for this aircraft, so as not to waste money and time that they invested on it.
The answer came when the first Typhoon in service revealed blistering performance at low altitudes opposing the incursions of the nazi Fw-190. At low altitudes the "Tiffy" was very fast and very maneuverable, and became clear that it could be an excellent fighter-bomber for ground attack. Armed with bombs, rockets and its devastating 20mm cannons, the Typhoon especially enjoyed the glory after the D-Day landing in Normandy, when proved invaluable in supporting close to advancing ground troops, killing tanks, artillery, locomotives, bunkers and so on.

I have chosen to portray a late production Typhoon IB, with a four bladed propeller and a "bubble" canopy.

Actually this poor Typhoon had to wait for almost three years to be finished! I finally found the time and will, even if I had to give up the idea of drawing a background.

For aviation enthusiasts: the identification numbers and letters are fictitious. So please, don't break your head looking for information on this specimen!
