The legendary Grumman F-14A Tomcat, star of movies like "Top Gun" and "The Final Countdown". I wanted to reproduce in detail the livery for this aircraft selectable in the PS2 video game Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War, my favorite shoot-em up. The lineart was done with Illustrator, the rendering with Photoshop.
The F-14 was designed as a long-range interceptor to defend the fleet, which consists of the aircraft carrier strike group; the Tomcat was going to replace the McDD F-4 Phantom II in that role. Equipped with powerful engines (top speed of Mach 2.4), the Tomcat had variable geometry wings (automatically controlled by a computer) that gave him good maneuverability at all speeds. Its perfect combination of weapons for long, medium and short range is unique and will remain so in the history of military aviation. The Tomcat was the first third-generation fighter to enter service in 1974 and is one of the most impressive combat aircraft ever built.
Some trivia: the livery on the top is inspired by the real one of the VF-84, a squadron whose symbol is the Jolly Roger. The camouflage at the bottom is based on that adopted for the Tomcat by the Iranian air force, the only foreign user of the F-14.
Sore point for Tomcat fans: this legendary fighter was officially retired from service with the U.S. Navy in 2006. I am not a warmonger, mind you: nevertheless I am sorry for this, as the Tomcat was very "romantic" a symbol of military aviation.
