F-84F Thunderjet 2

Un Republic F-84F "Thunderjet" dell'AMI, esposto al Museo della Scienza e della Tecnologia "Leonardo da Vinci" di Milano.

Lo F-84F era un grosso (fidatevi, è veramente grosso!) cacciabombardiere degli anni '50, costruito dalla Republic come sviluppo con ala a freccia del precedente F-84 "Thunderstreak" ad ala dritta della fine degli anni '40.
Capace di velocità prossime a quelle del suono, il Thunderjet non ebbe però un grande successo nell'USAF e fu quindi "dirottato" nella NATO, finendo così in servizio con una dozzina di forze aeree in Europa.
La Republic durante tutta la sua storia costruì praticamente solo grossi e pesanti cacciabombardieri monoposto e monomotore (il più famoso dei quali resta il P-47 Thunderbolt della II Guerra Mondiale), tutti caratterizzati da una corsa di decollo molto lunga. Durante gli anni '50, proprio quando entrava in servizio il Thunderjet, tra gli aviatori americani girava una storiella: si diceva che se fosse esistita una pista di decollo lunga quanto la circonferenza della Terra, la Republic avrebbe sicuramente costruito un apparecchio capace di doverla usare tutta!

A Republic F-84F "Thunderjet" AMI, exhibited at the Museum of Science and Technology "Leonardo da Vinci" in Milan.

The F-84F was a big (trust me, it's really big!) fighter-bomber of the '50s, built by Republic as swept-wing development of the previous straight-wing F-84 "Thunderstreak" of the late 1940s.
Capable of speeds near mach 1, by the way the Thunderjet hadn't a very successful career in USAF service, and was then "hijacked" into NATO, which put it in service in a dozen of european air forces.
Republic – throughout its history – built almost only large and heavy single-seat single-engine fighter-bombers (the most famous is the P-47 Thunderbolt of World War II), all characterized by a very long takeoff run. During the 1950s – just when the Thunderjet entered the service – among US fliers there was a joke: they used to say that if there would be a runway as long as the Earth circumference, Republic would surely built a plane capable of having to use the whole runway!
