Il P-51D Mustang, una delle macchine volanti più belle mai realizzate dall'uomo.
Nato nel 1940, Il P-51A sarebbe rimasto "solo" un buon cacciabombardiere, se qualcuno non avesse pensato di montargli il leggendario motore Rolls-Royce Merlin: con esso, il Mustang divenne un grande caccia.
Decollando dall'Inghilterra, il P-51B era capace di scortare i bombardieri alleati fino a Berlino grazie alla sua incredibile autonomia, ed era sufficientemente veloce e manovrabile da aver ragione della maggior parte dei caccia della Luftwaffe. Il P-51D era la versione ulteriormente evoluta, dotata di tettuccio a goccia e di 6 mitragliatrici invece di 4.
Non fu il solo grande caccia alleato, ma il Mustang giocò un ruolo vitale nella conquista alleata della superiorità aerea nei cieli d'Europa durante il 1944.
Questo non è il vero "Lucky Lady VII": è un Mustang costruito nel 1944, e nel 2009 è stato dipinto dal suo attuale proprietario come l'aereo del Maggiore Ernest E. Bankey Jr., un asso dell'USAAF che distrusse 9,5 aerei nemici in volo, più altri 7 al suolo.

A P-51D Mustang, one of the prettiest flying machines ever built by mankind.
Born in 1940, the P-51A would have been "just" a good fighter-bomber, if nobody thought of fitting it with the legendary Rolls-Royce Merlin engine: with that, the Mustang became a great fighter.
Taking off from England, the P-51B was able to escort allied bombers to Berlin and back, thanks to its astonishing combat range. It was also fast and agile enough to overcome most of the Luftwaffe interceptors and fighters. The P-51D was a further improvement, with a tear drop canopy and 6 machine guns instead of just 4.
The Mustang wasn't the only great allied fighter plane, but it surely played a vital role in obtaining air superiority over Europe during 1944.
This isn't the actual "Lucky Lady VII": it's a Mustang built in 1944 and painted like this by its most recent owner. This is the paint scheme of Major Ernest E. Bankey Jr., an USAAF ace whom got 9.5 aerial kills, plus 7 planes destroyed on the ground.
