This plate has been published in the 4th book of the "Dinosaurs" series (Jaca Book / Abbeville Press / Larousse / Kodansha / Hanser).
It illustrates a theory by my co-worker and friend Marco Signore, a paleontologist.
He thinks that Chasmosaurus belli (and maybe all the Chasmosaurinae) used their "shields" as some medieval armies did: these armies tightened up creating an impassable wall. So Marco thinks that Chasmosaurs used their shields not as a phisical defense, but as a "psychological defense" to create a barrier against predators.
And if Chasmosaurinae shields were coloured in the right way (in my plate I was inspired by some butterflies), they were also able to disorientate the aggressor (in this plate a Gorgosaurus libratus) as well as scaring it.

well, that technique its called herding, where a herd forms a wall to defend their selves from predators like seen in the picture
